1- Love and Marriage

Love and marriage, love and marriage
It's an institute you can't disparage
Ask the local gentry
And they will say it's elementary

Frank Sinatra

This such beautiful song starts with these lyrics. Surprisingly, once when I was singing this song to myself, I heard two guys talking about marriage. They were Mr. Curry Oz and Professor Thin King.

- Hey Tiny, you remember the guy who married off the couples secretly, because of the emperor who prohibited the marriage?
- First; don't call me tiny. Second, he was Saint Valentinus which known for St. Valentine's Day. And the emperor was Claudius II of Rome in 4th century BC.
- So why does an emperor prohibit such an act like marriage which regulates the order of society?
- Because, Claudius thought that marriage caused lack of power in wars. As you know until modern era, marriage was prohibited to the soldiers in many countries.
- By the way, why people needed to marry someone, I mean why did the marriage notion start?
- Before beginning of the mass agriculture, people had not needed to marry someone because polygamy was spread out and they were living in clans. In marriages between clans, men were joining to women's clan. Because men were temporary; they were the ones who had to deal with environmental problems such as wild animals and their duties were harder. After mass agriculture, men started the gain control of the clans due to their characters which tend to fight. They had not to deal with environmental problems now. To legitimate their system which descends from father to son they had to know the children's fathers. To secure monogamy they brought the family system which depends on marriage. Love is the way to control your mind to make you accept the patriarchal, commodity based social human lifestyle.

General Comment on Term

We started with media and continued with gender topics. I liked our teacher's teaching way. We could do more presentations and it could be more interesting. I wished classes were not that early so I could not have been sleepy. And also, it was ironic that all we do is talking and discussing about gender discrimination but while we were doing our presentations all groups consisted of people in the same sex.

Thank you :)

The Duchess

After Fried Green Tomatoes, this one was the most interesting movie about our topics. We saw inequality between men and women and strong and weak female characters. Since atmosphere of that era, it turned into an visual pleasure. They had interesting hair modals, keira knightley, literate powerful women, keira knightley, long and attractive dresses and keira knightley. So they did not need more.

Was he Voldemort?!

New York, I Love You

I do not. Nevertheless Uğur Yücel involved in so how could it be so bad? By talking about relationships and giving nothing new. It is full of advertisement such as one of the scenes they used in presentation: you could see apple and starbucks logos. Plus, it is not only cliche but also a good example of media which is created on patriarchal culture. We can see submissiveness of women in many scene.

Dislike.

Chocolat

I did not watched it yet but as I see in the presentation, it is not a movie about chocolate. It's about religion, ethnicity and brainwashing.

Most of people may like Roux but I found Comte more interesting. He is against to chocolattiere and gypsies. We see many politicians like him but he is different than other in some terms. He is clever, has no money ambition and literate. He is so sophisticated that we see his library in some scenes and it is really huge.

More than that, is there anybody did not long for chocolate after saw the presentation?

Forrest Gump

When it comes to Forrest Gump, we can say that it is completely a different case.
He has 75 IQ points. His only believes are the things that his mother said. He is neither brave, nor clever. He is like an opposite of hero image in movies. But he succeed because he is more human than other heroes that he does not evading from crying when he learns that Bubba has died.

I wish everyone has a self-denying mother like Forrest's.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Although we prepared it in one night and clock showed 4 am when we finished the job, it was enjoyable I think. People had good comments on it and most of the class seem like they like it. They didn't ask many questions- I remember only one- because it was satisfying and fulfilling.

Shortly before, I realized that the train on the movie symbolizes more than bed things because when Ruth and Idgie get in the train they help poor people outside the town so it may refer to involving and trying hard instead of staying outside.

By the way, does anyone see a place that green tomatoes are sold?
